Money Animal… Not A Singer!
Feb 26th, 2007 by Freddie
Being Involved in the Business Opportunity World is great, but unfortunately it does NOT guarantee you a good singing voice. You’d think it would (what with all that spare time for practice) but alas no, because on Friday night Freddie Goodman was ‘lost for words’. Read on for more frivolity…
So there we were in deepest darkest Soho, in a small, dark room booked for 12.
You could liken it to a torture chamber. Strangely accurate if you were subjected to the strangulated sounds that emerged…
Yes, I talking about Karaoke…
Needless to say I’m up with the latest trends in music. I mean I’m always reading Smash Hits, and of course NEVER miss an episode of Top of the Pops (ahem).
Which explains why I opened with ‘Mystify’ by INXS…
There were also some startling renditions of the following:
- Brown Sugar
- Staying Alive
- Hey Jude
- Smile by Lily Allen (oh dear oh dear)
- Beat It by Michael Jackson
- Like a Virgin (ooh er)
- Back in the USSR
- The Ghost Busters theme tune
If you’re interested, I can officially reveal that ‘Hey Jude’ lends itself best to this kind of activity…
Here are more top tips for Karaoke:
- Don’t get drunk and then try and duet with EVERYONE for EVERY song.
- Decide on a key and then stick to it - or else you’ll sound like teenager whose voice is breaking.
- If you want to ’sound good’ then pick a song where you’ll have to ‘put on’ a voice. Sinatra works well for this. The booming showmanship detracts from the lack of tunefulness.
- Sneak in a few sips of water before it’s your turn.
- Don’t choose a song with fast lyrics. If you’re anything like me you’ll get terribly confused and fall over.
- Applaud raucously at everyone else’s effort - they’ll be more inclined to give you a kinder reception.
- Don’t plan on doing anything with your voice after Karaoke - EVER again…
Because sadly for me (perhaps not so much for Debz) I can no longer speak anymore without sounding a like a sandpapered ‘Rod Stewart’.
I would nonetheless recommend the experience wholeheartedly!

Ha ha when’s the next one? I’m jealous, I want to reminisce over 80’s music too!
